I'm a pretty big soccer fan, and I grew up playing year-round with my brothers. My family was always traveling for tournaments and games.
STL has a huge soccer community; from the youth programs, to SLU and the other college teams, to STL FC! I have no doubt that MLS would be huge in the Lou and was extremely bummed when the vote didn't go through to build the stadium last year.
After that vote, it meant the only likely way to get an MLS team was with private funding...which might be happening!
The family that owns Enterprise has launched a bid for an MLS team.
