Avril Lavigne Sings "Head Above Water" Live During Candid Performance

Avril Lavigne recently released her first song in five years, and perhaps her most personal to date, "Head Above Water." The song reflects her battle with Lyme Disease, and is the first taste of her upcoming full-length studio album, which follows her 2013 self-titled LP.

Following the release of her emotional new single, Lavigne performed the track live on the Honda Stage in Studio A at Henson Recording Studio in LA. The studio is a place where Avril has recorded a number of songs, and also where several famous records originated, like the inspiring "We Are The World."

The Honda Stage platform celebrates determined, breakout artists, and both Avril and her song "Head Above Water" define what it means to be determined. In the power ballad, Lavigne sings about her struggle with Lyme Disease and her fight to rise above it. She sings, "Yeah, my life is what I'm fighting for/ Can't part the sea, can't reach the shore/ And my voice becomes the driving force/ I won't let this pull me overboard."

In a letter to fans on her website first announcing the song, she shared, "I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I'm really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly. Truly... by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive."
