Sam Smith had nothing but praise for Emma Thompson speaking out against Harvey Weinstein. The singer tweeted early Friday (October 13) morning, βPOWERFUL words from Emma Thompson this morning about Harvey Weinstein. F**king RESPECT!!β
On BBC2βs Newsnight, Emma Thompson gave a blunt interview regarding Weinsteinβs role in casting couch culture was part of a systemic βpublic healthβ and gender crisis. Thompson referred to Weinstein as βthe top of a very particular iceberg.β Of course, just as an iceberg only shows 10% above the waterβs surface, the same applies to dangerous men in Hollywood, Thompson pointed out.
Thompson did not mince her words when she called the former executive out, stating, βI donβt think you can describe him as a sex addict, heβs a predator. Thatβs different. Heβs at the top of, as it were the ladder of, a system of harassment and belittlement and bullying and interference. This has been part of our world, womenβs world, since time immemorial.β
Though she had only clashed with Weinstein during the time when Miramax owned Nanny McPhee, Thompson said, βI mean, Iβve just said Iβve spent my 20s trying to get old menβs tongues out of my mouth, you know, because they just thought, βWell sheβs up for it.β So I would imagine that that happens really very regularly, and so perhaps this is a moment when we can say to men and women: βOpen your eyes and open your mouths and say something.ββ
